Kaizen – Japanese-style improvement

Kaizen technology (Kaizen, jap. continuous improvement) is a complex concept covering philosophy, theory and instruments of management, allowing to acquire the advantages in competition by little costs. In economic sense the concept is directed to actions for continuous improvement of all functions of the company, from production to management. Kaizen originates from Japanese words “kai” – change, and “zen” – good or to the best. Kaizen has been implemented at several Japanese enterprises during an economic recovery after World War II and since then extended in the companies of the whole world.
In company operation, Kaizen means the system of work improvement of the whole company as well as structural divisions. At the same time without attraction of external investments, entirely by means of internal reserves.
The 4th Ukrainian Kaizen conference “Kaizen- small steps to great success” was held from November 14 till November 16 in Kiev, with participants
from all Ukraine. The representatives of PrJSC “Dneprometiz” O.D. Vatruba and S.V. Slobodin have participated in the conference. Interesting reports, exchange of experience, practical cases and even a kaizen-tour to “Elopak-Fastov” were components of a highly topical program of the conference.
The management principles as per 5S-methodology (accuracy, set in order, shine, standardize, discipline) have already started to realize in our company. Initially insistence on Kaizen principles was effected in divisions of repair and maintenance of equipment as well as repair work-shops of the metal coating sites. The chief of steel wire complex S.V. Slobodin, heads and mechanics of sites are responsible for primary implementation of these projects. Further it is planned to extend this practice to other divisions and ideally to all company.
Kaizen, or economical production is very effective management practice applied successfully in many companies in Ukraine and abroad. Now in Ukraine more than 350 companies actively operate with Kaizen, and some of them deeply set this system and show good results. Among them such big companies as “Interpipe”, “New Kramatorsk engineering plant (NKMZ)”, “Energomashspetsstal”, “Artmetallfurnitura” and other. «JT International Ukraine (JTI Ukraine)» company – is a part of Japan Tobacco International , one of the leading international tobacco companies, even on constant basis conducts kaizen-tours to the factory in Kremenchug.
It is difficult to estimate effect of Kaizen implementation, but the fact it works – undoubtedly. And effects in the companies implementers are estimated in hundreds of saved man-hours, bureaucracy reduction in management processes, economy in stock balance, increase of labor productivity, growth of capacities and export operations. And it should be noted that Kaizen is one of the leading systems on «expense- result» indicator, the solid economic effect can be achieved by means of minimum costs.
